Basic Facts about Sodium Hypochlorite

  • There’s a lot of confusion about Clorox® bleach. A versatile disinfectant with a simple and sustainable chemistry, bleach has been used for generations for everyday laundry and cleaning needs at home and outside home.

  • Some people believe bleach is dangerous or harmful. The truth is, when used as directed, bleach is neither. In fact, it’s the most widely available and affordable disinfectant on earth.

  • Bleach is effective disinfectant. It‘s active ingredient, sodium hypochlorite, denatures protein in micro-organisms and is therefore effective in killing bacteria, fungus and viruses.

  • Household bleach contains no free chlorine and breaks down mainly into salt and water during or quickly after use. So it is considered safe for the environment.

  • The World Health Organization recommends using household sodium hypochlorite (regular) as one of the low cost methods to disinfect water in case access to clean water becomes not possible during emergencies.
